From cataclysmic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions to imperceptibly slow surface weathering, geologists and geophysicists investigate the processes that have shaped the planet, its resource endowment and its environment throughout its 4.5 billion year history. Geology students are curious about the Earth and how it operates, and their studies often incorporate a significant sociological component, i.e., social geology. The candidate is expected to attract external funds from public and private sources.

Course emphasis is placed on anthropogenic impacts on natural systems, the impacts of geologic, biologic, and atmospheric processes on humans, and the effects of human activities on the environment. Internationally excellent and world-leading research in field, laboratory and theoretical (computer modelling) investigations. The talks were well attended, including appearances by John Kerry, his wife Teresa Heinz Kerry, and Norway's Foreign Minister, Mr. For example, students may develop new methods of employing satellite observations and ground-based geophysics to map targets for groundwater, whether for resource development or for understanding groundwater behavior; or they may calibrate satellite-based observations to physical properties on the ground surface to predict the likelihood of surface failure during an earthquake, e.g., by liquefaction.

Summer Research Projects are supported by the Dean's Summer Research Scholarship Program, and aim to introduce students to research activities within the Faculty. Although students may change curricular groups in the fall quarter, they must commit to a curricular group early on because this determines which department exam they will take. All course work used to complete the course unit requirements must be taken for a letter grade (A–F), except for seminars for which only S/U grades are allowed.

ESS required (14 credits): Two of ESS 311, ESS 312, ESS 313, ESS 314, ESS 418. This makes sense, because large research universities have the funds to attract excellent scientists and assist them in obtaining research grants. The Earth's rotation axis is tilted by 23.4392794383 degrees with respect to the, at different times of a variation in the 180 - 270 deg (mn), longitudes 270 - 360 deg (Winter). My current funded research in this area is in the Teton Range, where together with Susan Swapp and Ron Frost I am investigating what appears to be the oldest high-pressure metamorphism in North America.
