On 14 October, five days before their fifth wedding anniversary, Texier attempted suicide, shooting herself in the chest with a revolver while standing in the Place de la Concorde; she survived, although the bullet remained lodged in her vertebrae for the rest of her life. Under the tinkling of the ice, a stubborn, plodding ostinato indicates the sullen tread of a weary, saddened traveler.

The gong ageng has been described as having "the most beautiful sound in the world." Debussy was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and his use of non-traditional scales and chromaticism influenced many composers who followed. Debussy finally composed four pieces that were sent to the Academy: the symphonic ode Zuleima (based on a text by Heinrich Heine); the orchestral piece Printemps; the cantata La damoiselle élue (1887–1888) (which was criticized by the Academy as "bizarre", although it was the first piece in which the stylistic features of Debussy's later style began to emerge); and the Fantaisie for piano and orchestra, which was heavily based on César Franck's music and therefore eventually withdrawn by Debussy.

It would be interesting to see what this music was like; Debussy evidently thought it important, for so he described it in a letter to Ysaye in 1896, adding that it was " crit selon mes dernieres experiences sur la chimie musicale. ..."

Debussy, however, differs from, quite as much, if not more, than he resembles the impressionist painters, as regards his attitude towards the general body of his art. Unlike Classical music, Romantic music focused on expressing emotions and imagination, a step that greatly contrasted with that of music before. This shift parallels the movement commonly known as neo-classicism, which became popular after Debussy's death in 1918.

Eastman School of Music. 'Debussy at sea'. It was the pianist Antoinette Maute, a student of Chopin, who discovered his musical talent and prepared him for entrance to the Paris Conservatory at age 11. But he stayed in Paris, and joined a group of avant-garde artists who called themselves the "Hooligans". At first he studied to become a solo pianist, but when he was unable to earn the highest prizes in this discipline, Debussy turned to studying harmony and accompanying and succeeded in these disciplines to a larger degree.
