Although people of various social classes pursuing everyday activities had long been pictured in the backgrounds of both religious and secular Japanese paintings, it was only in the late 16th century that contented commoners pictured at work or at play began to appear as an independent central subject of Japanese art. On paper, these prints, watercolors, and drawings by artists such as Piranesi, Kirchner, Grosz, Schiele, and Klimt depict the continent’s people and places with a focus on the physical and psychological human imprint.

When Kirk Varnedoe showed comic strips in his show, High and Low, he was vilified—and that was in the mid-eighties. The show encourages local collecting by presenting a variety of works on paper in all media from more than 20 New York galleries. Frith's Private View at the Royal Academy 1881 (on loan from the Pope Family Trust) alongside works by Lawrence Alma-Tadema, G.
