Berlioz’s first effort was rejected in 1827; his second effort in 1828 won second prize; he tried again in 1829 but no awards were given that year. Variations on an Original Theme 'Enigma' [orch.] Op.36 (1898-9). .. The composer figured out a better beginning to his fifth symphony, with four notes that represent "fate knocking at the door." During one of these trips, while Berlioz enjoyed an afternoon of sailing, he encountered a group of Carbonari. Some of his compositions are still well remembered and have become classic "gay 90's style songs. Despite this careful planning, Berlioz failed to carry through with the plot. Many composers would take inspiration from the poetic nationalism present in their homeland. Volume I ends on the afternoon of December 9, 1832, the day of the concert that launched the composer's career.

What most people zero in on are the statistics: a chorus of 210 singers; an orchestra of 140 players, including two dozen percussionists; four brass ensembles totaling about 50 players; and, for good measure, a tenor soloist. The following years saw a great deal of output from Berlioz, not all completely successful.
