Indeed, it seems to be the case that James’s argument for the necessity of certain religious beliefs is occasioned by the inadequacy of his naturalistic (and perhaps more importantly, subjectivist) account of moral obligation. Pupils learn the way these worldview might approach a moral dilemma – including issues of whether human life should be protected at all costs, animal rights and war and assess which approach is more helpful in each case. It reduces the incidence of social pathologies, such as out-of-wedlock births, crime, delinquency, drug and alcohol addiction, health problems, anxieties, and prejudices.
