Just a note on translating here. When beginning to study Japanese, people often make the mistake of translating too literally. Och and eller can be used to connect sentences as well as elements in a noun phrase. Sentences which English speakers find normal today, might have seemed strange 100 years ago. The use of got is just one of those exceptions that became part of the language.
